Marketplace Communication

Marketplace Communication represents Merrie Spaeth's best commentaries from "Marketplace," the daily business show which airs on over 200 national public radio stations around the country. The former child movie star and White House aide to President Ronald Reagan is now a leading consultant specializing in executive training and crisis communication management.

In Marketplace Communication, Spaeth analyzes and comments on the strategy, style, and techniques in corporate communications. Spaeth delves into real-life case studies in internal, as well as external communications, scoring corporations for the effectiveness - or lack of - in the message and the messenger. Drawing on her extraordinary background in business, politics, broadcasting, and print media, Spaeth shares her experience, philosophy, and proven techniques with the reader. She talks about why loyalty is an endangered concept, whether women really do communicate differently than men, why nothing is truly private today, as well as giving advice on such practical matters as how to be a better public speaker or communicate in a crisis.

"Our challenge is to provide a common definition of 'communication,' to make it useful to executives and to help business gain a competitive edge," says Spaeth. "And we have to do it in a format that is easy and fun to read. What's more fun than seeing everyone else's mistakes?"

Marketplace Communication's mini chapters offer lessons on how to use communications as a strategic tool, with chapters such as:

  • Can Your Cellular Telephone Really Cause Cancer?
  • Mickey Loses Manasses

Spaeth offers advice for the CEO or wanna-be CEO, in chapters titled:

  • Stupid, Stupid, Stupid (So you made a fool of yourself. Don't worry.)
  • Vision (Do you need the "vision thing"?)
  • Should a Company President Do His Own Ads? (Yes and No.)

In addition, Spaeth tackles contemporary business issues such as:

  • Just What is Sexual Harassment? (We need a new definition.)
  • What Manners Tell Us (How to create a culture of good manners.)
  • Should a Company Publicize Good Deeds? (Depends.)

Spaeth offers practical advice for anyone - from the nouveau executive to the seasoned veteran:

  • How to Give an Introduction
  • But I Can't Talk Without Overheads!
  • Using the Anecdote to Become a Skilled Storyteller

"My goal was to help the reader think about communication with key audiences- employees, the media, the public, shareholders, business partners, and to offer practical and entertaining advice for today's executive," explains Spaeth. "It's a crucially important skill, and almost everyone needs to do a better job communicating."
